International Egg and Poultry Review: East Asia
GLOBAL - This is a weekly report by the USDA's Agricultural Marketing Service (AMS), looking at international developments concerning the poultry industry. This week's report focuses on the poultry situation in East Asia.



The East Asia region includes China, Hong Kong, Japan, North Korea, South Korea, Macau, Mongolia, Ryukyu and Nansei Islands, and Taiwan.

Approximately 99 per cent of United States fowl exports for the January-April 2010 are frozen cuts. The 2 single largest frozen fowl cut items exported to East Asia are frozen chicken paws and feet with 32 per cent and the Other Frozen Chicken category with 30 per cent of total frozen fowl cuts exports. In 2010 approximately 54 per cent of frozen US poultry exports went to Hong Kong compared to 2009 when a little over 76 per cent of total frozen cut exports to East Asia went to China.

About 96 per cent of the January-April 2010 US turkey exports to East Asia consisted of frozen cuts. China is so far the leading 2010 frozen turkey cuts importer from the US in the Far East. China took 54 per cent of US’s frozen turkey cuts exports followed by Hong Kong with 31 per cent for the January-April, 2010 time frame. Frozen turkey wings were 45 per cent of frozen turkey cuts exported to the Far East making them the popular item.
